Katya
Went last night to China Red on Rockingham Gate. It's a new chinese restaurant specialising in Szechuan food which means a lot of it is very spicey and also they have a lot of dishes with offal. My husband spent some time in Chengdu and says the food is very authentic although they don't use as much szechuan pepper. If you like spicey food, I strongly recommend it. The menu is nothing like other chinese restaurants in Sheffield. They don't have a web site but their phone number is 272 1332. If you phone to make a booking, or if you go in, they will ask if you are sure because the food is very hot! They indicate on the menu how hot each dish is by using a system of chillis (1-3 where 3 is very hot indeed). Even if a dish has no chillis against it, it might be a little bit spicy. As a warning, the chilli symbol is above, rather than below, the English text.
chinaski
Sounds great - think i'll make this my next stop.
PeteM01
It sounds excellent apart from the skimping on the peppers. Sichuan food needs to be mouth-numbingly hot for the real experience! BTW, do they serve duck's tongue?
Fantomas
Sounds good - I've been to Red Chilli in Manchester which is a Szechuan restaurant and thought it was great. Is it where Top Wok/Marble Arch was or a different building altogether?
theripsaw
We need a decent chinese since Hui Wei went down the pan with their menu (standards) change

BTW, do they serve duck's tongue? Yup, duck's tongues are on the menu. The peppers I was referring to were the peppercorns rather than chilli peppers. There are loads of chillis. We didn't try a "3 chilli" dish but the "2 chilli" rabbit dish was pretty darned fiery

Sorry to be less than helpful but someone else was driving.

They have a strange anaesthetic effect (after a few minutes of heat!).

Alastair
We went to this restaurant last night, based on the recommendations here. We won't be going back. It's probably OK if you are Chinese, but we found there was a huge language barrier with the staff barely speaking English. The menu has English as an afterthought and is very confusing. It's difficult to know what to order and there's no advice available. They also asked if we really wanted to come in as the food was very spicey. We were the only English in the place and I got the feeling they may have been happier if we weren't there. Another English group came in, but after looking at the menu for five minutes they walked out. Beer was cheap at £2.50 a pint for Boddingtons or Stella, but when we tried to order we were told "no beer". Only tiny bottles at £2.90 each. We ordered our food and the plates are generous, plenty enough for two people on one plate. The food also arrived in record time, maybe 3 minutes after ordering. Unfortunately the beef was largely fat and gristle and the seafood dish had large pieces of what looked and tasted like luncheon meat in it. My sons vegetarian tofu order came with some unidentified meat in it, I suspect it was tripe which features largely in many other dishes on the menu. He had diarrhea last night and was sick this morning, which may or may not have been because of what he ate. Fried rice was nice as were the spicey Szechuan noodles. Total for 3 was £55, so not that cheap, especially considering the low quality of the ingredients used. So all in all 5/10, go to Jabu instead.
