Firemansam
I seem to remember a cafe opposite the Black Bull. Were there ever any shops in the corner of the church grounds at the bottom of Priory Road ?
Nigel Womersle
The Marden cafe you refer to was what is now the Bayleaves restaurant in the High Street shopping centre. There was a cafe opposite the Black Bull (cafe was 5 Church Street). Locals always referred to it as 'Tiddler's'. You had a few steps to climb to get to the double doors. It doubled as a grocery shop too. There were never any shops on the corner of the old churchyard (Priory Road - Church Street). The old Reading Room was on the corner (with a house behind it). Then came a house, the cafe mentioned, and then another house. I have a photo of the Reading Room etc.
