Heyesey
There are two downsides to squirrels: 1) They will eat ALL of the food you put out for birds, so you won't get many birds still coming around; 2) They'll dig up the lawn to bury a food cache. They're great to see around if you don't mind this, or can find genuinely squirrel-proof bird feeders.
Minimo
I think I read or heard that pepper was a good squirrel deterrent. If you mix it with the bird food, the birds won`t mind but the squirrels stay away. I wish I had some round my way.

Ouija
I like them, they're cute! I've persuaded a few to take food right out of my hand. I get them near my house a lot too. I've got a squirrel feeder as well

They're great to see around if you don't mind this, or can find genuinely squirrel-proof bird feeders. But watching them break into your squirrel proof birdfeeders is like the best bit. We give em little obstacle courses, with the food suspended on some string, with other things on the string to make it hard for the squirrels to get along It. It works mostly and we get plenty birds coming in to feed, any squirrel that does make it pretty much deserves a meal by that point.
