KyleChristie
Hey all, I'm a journalism student at Sheffield University and I'm doing a project on Barnsley. I know this is a Sheffield forum but the people I'm looking for could be living anywhere in the region, or beyond now so thought it could be worthwhile posting! I'm looking for someone, or someone who has a relative who would remember the opening of Barnsley Town Hall in 1933. I think they would have to be at least 80 years old. It took place on December 12th 1933 and the town hall was opened by the Prince of Wales, later to be King Edward. He was also served by Albert Hirst, the butcher while he was in the town! Basically, in light of the 75th anniversary of the opening of the town hall, I'm trying to find someone who would remember the actual opening taking place to go with the story. If you know of anyone, or if you yourself remember!, give me an email on K.Christie@sheffield.ac.uk or reply to the thread. If anyone has any recommendations as to how I might find someone, I'd appreciate the advice as well. Thanks all
merrydown
Maybe you could write to the letters page of the Barnsley Chronicle, the weekly newspaper for the Barnsley area. I think more people of an age that would actually remember the Town Hall being opened are more likely to read the newspaper rather than Sheffield Forum. http://www.barnsley-chronicle.co.uk/ Also, according to the Barnsley M.B.C site, the Town Hall was formally opened on the 14th December, not the 12th. http://www.barnsley.gov.uk/bguk/Council_Democracy/About%20Barnsley Good luck!
