When you wanted to change gear you had to press the clutch down like we do now, then put the gear stick into neutral, then let the clutch out and press it in again and then go into the gear you wanted. Something like that anyway and something to do with the syncromesh, and after all that if you were going up a steep hill then by the time you had done all that you had practically come to a standstill.
