gandlandk
Inspired by this forum discussion, I have recently undertaken a challenge to ride up all of the steepest hills in Sheffield. My findings can be seen in this blog: http://sheffield-hills.blogspot.com/ In this, I used this forum to set a list of 25 roads (originally 26, but I think whoever suggested Gleadless Road must have been joking!) from those mentioned most often. I have now cycled all of them, though admittedly on an eBike since I am fat and old. I found most phone based GPS or mapping sites to be fairly inaccurate - especially for the shorter roads. Strava, in particular, struggled with this - I eventually found that using Google Maps for elevation (since it measured it in feet rather than metres) and PlotaRoute for distance to be the best combination to give an accurate gradient calculation. This combination certainly matched my own view of which ones were steepest after having ridden them. It may not match the accuracy of the BBC's measurements, but I think is certainly good enough to get comparative readings for the 25 hills on my list. To spoil the surprise, neither Hagg Hill, Blake Street nor Jenkin Road came out top...

Lived at the top of Wellfield Road from 1991 - 2018 and still reckon Blake Street was the steepest - or certainly the hardest to walk up - that concave section from just below Boyce Street up til about 20 yards from the pub was a killer. There's a road with a similar profile to Blake Street where we live now in France - ie going down in a car there is a section of the road below you that you can't see! Thank you once again for your efforts - much appreciated.
choogling
From my bike pedalling days, long over, I still rate Bishops court rd. Meersbrook as the steepest residential road in Sheffield. Its the only road in the whole of Sheffield i could not restart again after stopping for a rest. I notice Kent rd. also in Meersbrook gets a mention but a low score ,Kent road in the sixties was cobbled so I never tried riding up it. On 15/01/2017 at 16:35, SteelHouse said: I know it's not the steepest per se...but for the cyclists...try Carr Rd, from Deepcar all the way up to Bolsterstone...long steep drag, couple of "rest points" where it probably drops off to about 6 or 7%, it's not the steepness, but the leg busting length and its one continuous hill..the bottom bit is especially tough, and while we are out in Deepcar/Stocksbridge...try Nanny Hill from the main road, up past the clock tower all the way to Stocksbridge park Steels ground..another tester!!! Oh and Hole House Lane, from main road, up pas the school..its all hills out there! You forgot the bicycle hill climb road course Pea Royd lane Deepcar/Stocksbridge, not sure of the district but it might even go into the Barnsley area at the top. Ant68
Doesnt Blake Street have a handhail running up the side of the pavement?? Back in the ‘80s id drink in the Blake at the top, my then gf’s uncle or cousin ran it. Luckily we got there from Walkley and not from the bottom of the hill !!
