Andy C
in the city centre: dove and rainbow, dog and partridge, grapes, Bath Hotel and University arms are worth a visit for beer and character, devonshire cat for beer and food.
Carlos76
the hollin bush in intake has a definite tapper and best room with half decent beer. for friendliness try the fox & duck in tinsley.
jongo
The Rivelin Hotel has great beer AND food Even going there for Christmas Day dinner
andy.d
The Hillsbrough Hotel near the Primrose View tram stop is excellent and has superb real ales. The Fat cat too. Hillsbrough traditionally seemed to have more light ones, Fat Cat has darker ones. Devonshire cat is poor nowadays.
whitescar
Thanks for all the suggestions so far, quite a few I haven't tried in there. I quite like the dev cat for it's range of fruit beers but haven't been in that recently.
Bloomdido
New Barrack Tavern, Penistone Road. Good food, proper beer, lots of lager for foreigners, southerners and my mate Andy and live music Friday & Saturday (some barely has a pulse - but usually good). Kthebean
The dev cat is alright but the food is overpriced and the furniture/decor is a bit sterile for my taste. I would agree with others that if you have a pub 'connoisseur' with you kelham island/fact cat/riverside are the best combos.
