Alastair
You might not know them as Rube Goldberg machines, but that's their official name. This one will take some beating - http://www.chilloutzone.de/files/player.swf?b=10&l=197&u=ILLUMllSOOAvIF//P_LxP92A42lCHCeeWCejXnHAS/c
medusa
I wonder how long it takes to set something like that up and perfect it so that everything does exactly what it's meant to? As much fun as it looks I don't think I have the patience.
Alastair
I just discovered this one which may be better. The incomprehensible over excited Japanese commentary and the painstaking slowness of some of the steps adds something: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=1kvdq8cRNBM
Phanerothyme
They're a bit 'Heath Robinson" these Rude Goldberg machines aren't they?
Alastair
Heath Robinson has a slightly different connotation, meaning somewhat bodged and crap in a particularly British way.
flamingjimmy
It may not be quite as complex but this one's still pretty cool http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=rspYOxcnaTk&feature=related

purdyamos
I think the cobbled-together-at home versions are best. There's something about that profusion of gaffer tape and the limitation of any normal household tasks that speaks of some extra measure of dedication. Or desperation?! I can just imagine these people as six year olds at kids' parties playing mousetrap: "Is that all?"
