Welcome to the fun world of employment law. She should have been let go in normal (painfully slow, needlessly complicated, expensive) way that every other employee who can't do their job goes through. Driven by the media and government they tried to cut corners and will now pay for it.

Most people in non public sector jobs can be sacked on the spot if they can't do their job. Shoesmith's job was to protect children from abuse and she allowed a child to be tortured to death on her watch. How on earth can anyone say she was unjustly sacked? The problem is the public sector unions, they will do everything in their power to prevent their members being fired no matter what they have done or how useless they are. Haringey is not a wealthy area and now the people of the borough are having to stick their hands in their pockets to reward a woman for standing idly by while a child was killed. And you wonder why people resent paying tax?

Absolute twaddle. That can't happen in any job let alone the public sector, then it really can't happen. Unions, rightly in most cases, wouldn't let it happen.

Besides her job was to manage the social workers who also didn't do their jobs. Other agencies failed. None of them abused and killed a three year old. You're venting at the wrong people. If she needed kicking out, there's a way to do it.

I've worked in plenty of jobs where people have been sacked on the spot for not being up to their jobs.

You don't think a manager has to take responsibility for the failings of their team? It wasn't just a single instance of failure, it was systematic and went on for years. A captain is supposed to go down with his ship, not blame the crew and walk off with a massive payout.

Sharon Shoesmith is a disgusting woman. If she has any ounce of human dignity she should refuse this payout. It just goes to show how little regard public sector workers have for the people that pay their wages. We are just cattle to them.

I'm not disputing the fact she should have gone, but there are procedures you've got to go through. Because they had the media on their side, haringay council thought they didn't need to bother.

I'm afraid there is not a lot of difference between councils when it comes to how they deliver childrens social services. The system is completed messed up and a big reason for that is interference from government every time there is a tradegy... the politicians need to be seen to be acting and being tough even if they make things worse. And they do make it worse because the system is choking in bureaucracy and back-side covering activities due to a culture of fear.

Shoesmith may be part of the establishment but pinning the blame soley on her isn't dealing with the problem and politicians using their influence to sex-up reports is a disgrace. It is nailed on constructive dismissal and she deserves her payout.
