Dave Pelzer (a Child Called It)

Recommended Posts

I beg to differ i dont believe its extreme human emotion and suffering used to amuse? I know after reading the book I felt a lot of things but certainly wasnt amused I simply believe dave has a story to tell and thats simply what hes doing I maybe niave however I dont think its used just to amuse.

Yeah, that's how I think about it. It's extreme human emotion and suffering used to amuse, to titillate, as it were.

It's an unfortunate by-product of the major public breast-beating that surrounded Diana's death.

thanks for taking the time to give me such a detailed reply, Ive not read his brothers books and to be honest I dont really believe the intention of the book was to get people to like it i generally believe the intention was to raise awareness of what goes on behind close doors and make people think and possibly give some guidance to those unfortuenates who are in a similar position.

Ive not read his self help book but im intending to purchase it and give it a read through see what happens with that.

I read the same books, found it emotionally awful and felt sorry for him and wished no child would be overlooked. I also learned from it, a few things here and there which I could apply to my own job and did.

Anyway, I later read his book on dealing with it all and I'd say he isn't carrying it all with him, but that he is scarred and has learned and that he is the victor as he has made money from his mothers vileness, for that I cannot fault him. His self help book is perhaps a little too esoteric but still remains as a potential tool.

I would agree that his brothers book was weak by comparison and indeed would not likely have been published without the success of his sibling.

I've read one or two in the genre, all with horror and with the same feeling I have for soap operas, I prefer to live my own life than read or watch those of others, fictitious, slanderous or otherwise. Having said that, each educates me as I work with children and I have dealt with the horrors that SS encounter. One about Muchausens by proxy, one or two generic and Ugly - which I hated.

I have distinct preferences regarding my reading material and I don;t enjoy those books but I believe they have their place.

I can see where your coming from but how could any realistic person base a view of the truth of the book when all they have done is read it they havent met the bloke etc

The story is told through a young boys eyes leading upto his adult life I do not believe someone could make up such a gripping story based on there own imagination plus if it wasnt true surely certain laws would prohibit this book from being published.

I was simply repeating what my mum has told me, who has read all the books and has spent her life working with abused children. She doesn't believe a lot of what he says.

Nothing is too intense for somebody to make up, otherwise how would the person inflicting it know what they are doing?

How can it be proved that these people are truly innocent just because they insist theyr innocent it does not mean they are completely.

You have cast judgement of wether pelzers claims are true or not thats all you seem to be doing in my opinion.

Child abuse does happen on a regular basis which is unfortueanate however I dont believe cases like this happen on a fairly regulary basis but let me guess you or your mum see it daily.

For some reason your so sceptical about pelzers claims.

I dont think its a money issue because if we base opinions of the assumption things are true if he was working this often as potrayed in book or even working in the RAF i doubt money would really be that much of an issue.

Plenty of people in plenty of real world examples have lied about the abuse they have been subject to for a variety of reasons. Those claims have had various effects on the other parties involved, in some circumstances the accused have been jailed for crimes they don't commit.

I have cast no judgment over whether Pelzer's claims are true or not, and I have no real opinion either way. What I do question is people who blindly accept every work he says. There would clearly be a motive to make up some of the claims in his book, it makes money.

I also believe that whilst what has, supposedly, happened to him is truly horrific, there isn't enough done in this country combat child abuse and this happens on a fairly regular basis. There are many children who suffer abuse in silence and do not feel they can talk to anybody about it. There are also many children who suffer abuse, tell somebody and nothing is done about it. I sometimes encounter this on an almost daily basis. Whilst this may seem almost unrelated to this thread, if all those people who read the 'emotional porn' were to make a stand against child abuse in a variety of ways, rather than posting about it on this forum we could go a small way to improve some children's lives in this all too often uncaring country that we live in.

As i said i find it hard to believe reason being if he was in RAF money wouldnt be such a issue and 2ndly surely a story of this sort has to be backed up with reasonable facts.

My wife read his books about 4 years ago she believed it all - I started to read them but stopped after the first book, I found it hard to believe and I reckon what he writes sells books loads of them - after all who can say if hes telling the truth or not - the more disturbing the book the more it sells the more money made simple.

There may be some truth in his story however we don't know where fact stops and fiction starts.

You need to make your own mind up.

wonder how much he is worth?

if you had took time to read the comment properly you would see that he didnt put everything in 1 book ie abuse wise if it was all a lie wouldnt he stick to the original story instead of moving onto something else.

Of course he didn't put everything in to one book because then there would be nothing to wite about in his other books - All about money

i have read all the books and seen a few interviews ect, plus his brother also did a book which also backed up his claims,

this case made a great change in america on how child abuse is dealt with so thanks to people like david less children have to go through years of abuse. for all you that doubt his abuse do a little reasearch into this person and the people who dealt with the case such as neighbours/school teachers/police officers and the social worker

phew I thought I was the only one who potrayed a decent opinion on this remarkable gentlemen, its a shame dave had to go through this abuse for anything to be changed however looking on the upside because he felt he should speak out this may have helped alot of other children and maybe even saved a few lives.
