retrogo
Stones is still a top pint IMO and a much better drink than most of these trendy 'real ales' that tast like ****. A little trip down memory lane: I'm inclined to agree with you. Almost every real ale I try tastes like burnt wheatabix in a microwave (yes I warm my milk on the bikies), and makes me expell the substance from my body from whichever end. If you dare to criticise these crap beers in front of the real ale police then they'll tell you 'it's because (the pub) isn't looking after the beer properly', but even the real ales in The Sheffield Tap or Rising Sun and other revered 'real ale' watering holes still tasts awful. Now if only they did draft Stones!

Frank Sidney
i have to agree with you there the ringside/ball is crap for a pint of stones I used to go in years ago. Think Don was the landlord at first. But I remember Colin as well, he was there for a few years...It was a good pub, but the beer was always a bit ropey. Which is strange because they had the same delivery as the Arms...
alchresearch
Real ale sales on the rise as Britain's beer drinkers tire of lager Growing popularity for real ale among women and younger drinkers sees first UK sales increase in 50 years http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2010/sep/12/real-ale-beer-sales-rise Makes you wonder why these pubs specialising in real ale are always packed and the grotty Stones / Carling pubs are closing. ANGELFIRE1
I think its brewed in Burton on Trent now by one of the small independent brewers. Shocking really ,but thats all down to Mrs Thatch in the 80s when she decided the larger brewing companies had too much power and forced them to sell up some of them to the smaller companies. The larger brewers like Stones and Whitbread who employed many people in this area suffered and thats why loads of pubs are shutting down and have done for the last few years because the smaller companies cannot possibly keep the pubs open because of overheads needed. Then the ones they put tenants in the rip off with silly rent increases. I for one miss Stones Well I have heard some lurid tales about Maggie, but this takes the biscuit. She has closed mines, ruined the steel industry, looked after the rich, eaten new born babies and now ruined the flavour of beer. There is no reason a small brewery cannot produce good tasting ale, dozens of them do. As for the boozers shutting down, probably a couple of reasons that have helped, the cig ban (NEW Liebour) and the availability of booze from the supermarket at half the price charged by your local. So, it looks doubtful that Maggie or any Tory led Govenment are guilty, but NEW Liebour are culpable. Angel.
T 42
I don't think beer is ever the same once it is moved from its home brewery. There was a time when Sheffield brewed Stones was a top beer although the competition in those days wasn't great. Nowadays it seems to be just a brand name that the brand owners use to sell various different beers that they buy from whoever will produce something suitable at the lowest price. The brand was owned by Bass who were taken over by Interbrew but they sold the name to Coors about 10 years ago, and Coors currently have beers brewed by Marstons which they sell as Stones. I've come across a mid brown beer at 3.7% being sold as Stones and a pale coloured one at 4.1% also being sold locally under the same name. As with all these generic beers that are brewed cheap they are aimed at the non discriminating drinker most of whom probably think it is still being brewed by William Stones down on Rutland Road. alchresearch
You're right, water makes a huge difference to the taste. You could tell with Guinness and you could tell with Boddingtons. Unless of course your tastebuds have been ruined with bland beers!
