Happy St George's day everyone

Wouldn't it be a good idea to have Shakespeare Day as our national day, instead of St. George's day?

He was English;

He was a genius;

He is famous all over the world;

He is likely to remain famous for many, many centuries yet;

He is an uncontroversial figure (if you can discard the nonesense about Bacon or others having written the plays);

He looks good on stamps;

He brings more tourists in than St. George ever did;

St. George is not exclusive to England

That'd put paid to St Paddy's day wouldn't it?! We'd be more cultured, our Shaky is more famous, and To Be Or Not To Be was a cracking song from BA Robertson (youngsters unfamilair with said singer, do a search under 'singers with large noses').

I'm quickly warming to this idea. We could sit round the fire in the pub, discussing the merits of dear old Bill and whether Stratford Upon Avon is as easy to get to as was say, back in 1972.

William Shakespeare day. Lord Chaverly - you're onto a winner, methinx.:thumbsup:

And to cap it all, he truly looks the dog's on stamps. :clap: :clap:

According to one site, George is the patron saint of:

(big breath now)

Aragon; agricultural workers; archers; armourers; Beirut, Lebanon; Boy Scouts; butchers; Canada; Cappadocia; Catalonia; cavalry; chivalry; Constantinople; Crusaders; England (by Pope Benedict XIV); equestrians; farmers; Ferrara Italy; field hands; field workers; Genoa Italy; Georgia; Germany; Gozo; Greece; herpes; horsemen; horses; husbandmen; Istanbul; knights; lepers; leprosy; Lithuania; Malta; Moscow; Order of the Garter; Palestine; Palestinian Christians; plague; Portugal; riders; saddle makers; saddlers; skin diseases; skin rashes; soldiers; syphilis; Teutonic Knights; Venice

So we have a foreign saint foisted on us by the Pope, whether we wanted one or not. - it's just like the EU!

George never set foot in England,

He's also the patron saint of syphilis and prostitutes
