Ms Macbeth
It's not so much a classless society but rather the rich and poor have become largely indistinguishable due to easy credit, debt isn't real wealth though. I would define class as the standard of living. I think its much more than the standard of living - that can change dramatically during people's lives, but it doesn't change them. For most people its about a lot more than just money. It includes things like the way people speak, what they spend their money on, what their leisure pursuits and hobbies are, what books they read (if they read at all), their education, how they behave, how they dress, and so on. Its also how we see ourselves, and how we were brought up. Ordinary society has changed loads since the 1950s - when everyone 'knew their place' (It really was like the John Cleese/Ronnie Barker/Ronnie Corbett sketch) The only home owners tended to be the upper & upper middle classes, most people rented, professional people were even known to have council houses! (Only the choicest estates though:o) Now around 70% of us have bought/are buying our homes. We all have our own ideas about what is 'classy' too.
