Famous climber off Top Gear - charity lecture TONIGHT!

Recommended Posts

World renowned climber Leo Houlding, who famously beat Jeremy Clarkson in an Audi RS4 on Top Gear by climbing up the Verdon Gorge then BASE jumping off the top, is tonight giving a lecture with author and climber Andy Cave at The Pennine Theatre in Hallam Square. The tickets are £10 and it's for a wonderful cause, to help children in Malalea receive a secondary school education. The details are here. I am going, can't wait.

Not only is this for charity, but Leo is one of the most entertaining climbers I've ever met, he is an absolutely lovely lad and has a heart of gold. Andy is also a fantastic bloke, an ex-miner who is now a renowned climber and author. You can buy his remarkable story Learning to Breathe on amazon here.

Here's a bit about Andy's book:

In 1986, after much soul searching, he quit his job as a miner in order to devote himself to mountaineering. At the same time he decided to educate himself, acquiring almost from a standing start academic qualifications including a PhD in socio-linguistics. This extraordinary twin odyssey is graphically recalled in this remarkable book. In the Himalaya in 1997, Andy achieved a courageous first ascent on one of the steepest and most difficult summits in the world - the north face of Changabang.

And here's the best Top Gear clip ever, imo, where Leo beats Clarkson up the Verdon Gorge!

And here's a video of Leo talking about and doing the following:

This is definitely one of the best nights out in Sheffield for a long time!
