Support for 'Mandela Day'

Nelson Mandela was a terrorist. No one on this thread has actually denied that. whether you can justify his acts of terror against the apartheid regime is a mute point, he was the leader of the ANC so must carry responsibility for the groups terrorist actions.

 

The real debate should be about his motives, was he fighting against an unacceptable, barbaric regime for freedom and equal rights for all, in which case the argument that his actions are justified to some extent is proved. Or was he fighting for power at any cost regardless of any other considerations? Then he is a terrorist in the accepted sense and should be treated by history accordingly.

 

The ANC won their war in South Africa and as always happens, history, at least in the short term is written by the victors. History will ultimately record that one unfair despotic regime, that at least could feed its people was replaced by an equally despotic regime that could not. The parrallels with Zimbabwe and so much of sub saharan Africa are there for all to see.

How many black African police inspectors were there during apartheid? There's no reason to expect the new guy to have experience. The important thing is that unlike your friend he wouldn't be working for the apartheid regime.

 

So it's ok then to throw someone out of his job because he's the wrong colour?

Did you imagine that, after more than 40 years of apartheid, the whites would keep their jobs..?

 

That's what Mandela promised. The reason the new police inspector got the job was probably more to do with membership of the ANC than the colour of his skin although the two do tend to go hand in hand.

I have a friend who spent 28years as a police inspector in S.A. When the ANC got in power he was ousted from his job to make way for a black guy,(who my friend said had no experience)This apparently happened all the time.He came back to Scotland having lost his police pension.

How many black African police inspectors were there during apartheid? There's no reason to expect the new guy to have experience. The important thing is that unlike your friend he wouldn't be working for the apartheid regime.

Try substituting "the wrong colour" with "working for apartheid". (Yes, it's OK) There are whites and people of all ethnicities in the ANC.

 

Obviously your friend who emigrated to South Africa and worked for the apartheid regime for 28 years had little concern for the plight of the indigenous African population who were suffering because of it. You think it's a big deal that he lost his job and pension. Many Africans lost their lives because of the South African security forces. People's priorities are always interesting.
