Lostrider
Just out of curiosity, any one have any idea when / where this was taken? What is going on in the photo. It's from a collection of old postcards I have that came from a lady in Darnall / Handsworth many years ago. Here
tasha_78
Its the crowning of a Sunday school May Queen and Captain. The boys with the poles formed an arch for the Queen to walk through before she was crowned. At our Sunday school, the boys with the poles walked through from the back of the hall and made arches along the aisle then the queen walked through them and up onto the stage for the crowning ceremony
Lostrider
Thanks tasha 78, that's one piece of the jigsaw in place. I was interested in the backdrop to the ceremony. I am sure I have seen that building somewhere.
tasha_78
It looks very much like our Sunday school hall, at Gleadless Congregational Church at the bottom of Gleadless Common, but I suppose they were all very much alike. Sorry I cant help you any further Lostrider
skippy
I was interested in the backdrop to the ceremony. I am sure I have seen that building somewhere. Backdrops were very popular in the 40's, 50's and early 60's L/R, many church halls & old picture theatres had them as they hosted small shows & pantomimes from time to time, as well as the May Queen festivals. feederfil
I believe it's Birley Carr Chapel!I'm not 100%but I seem to recognise a couple of faces which would date it about 1957.
