The thing with Gordon Brown is that realistically we should take our hats of to him, he infact inhereted a poison plant or chalice. Tony Blair knew what was about to happen and so got out while the going was good.

Even I, veteran Thatcher hater, would have voted for chamberlain by a country mile.

 

Chamberlain thought that Germany would be happy with their acquisition Czechoslovakia, he declared war as soon as they invaded Poland. The poor bugger was dying and only lasted until November 1940.

 

Churchill respected his efforts, even though he disagreed with him.

it's difficult in British politics because best/worst PM is not the same as best/worst party leader. PM's aren't heads of state, like especially American or French presidents are. PM's only last so long, but party leaders can last longer in the influence they ultimately have. In this way, even losers like Kinnock (but not Gaitskell) can have more actual effect than winners like Wilson. Clement Atlee was the best PM of them all. Thatcher, second. They both had hiccups. Labour never got the chance to govern again for 13 years after Atlee lost, and Thatcher's legacy was ultimately to divide the Tory party and condemn it to a similar number of years in the wilderness. You can't really tell how good, or how bad they were until at least 20 years after they've left the scene.

Yes, we would have been far better letting the likes of Hitler, Mussolini and Galtieri do exactly what they wished.
