Dove & Rainbow -Whats your views

Recommended Posts

i think goldenfleece deserves a lot of credit for running 2 decent pubs that are both completely different. it must have been very tempting to simply produce an identical version of the dove in broomhill but obviously this wouldn't have worked and the york is a credit to the area IMO. the dove is not my thing at all but can understand why people like it so I am impressed that goldenfleece can see things from others point of view too.

I really like it :) Feels *comfortable* regardless of who is in, or how busy/quiet it is. My mates often visit from other cities and all like D&R.

Actually - i've just moved back to Sheffield, to Broomhill, and i noticed a sign in the D&R saying that the York is a *sister pub* ? So does that mean it's a proper rock pub ? I've never been in.......

No the York its not a rock pub, its a real ale pub with a lively feel to it, although a lot of rock on the jukebox. We are very popular with students and locals alike. Its a very mixed bag of patrons, from metalhead students, Camra and real ale buffs, general locals and students, a full microcosm of the area, which is what a good local pub should be.

Yeah I always get people from different Cities coming in the Dove, Nottingham the other week, manchester, Leeds, Newcastle, etc. Very refreshing to know we are well known all over the UK.

LOL...NO!.....Three more nationally. No threat to your trade dears!

Most pubs suffer greatly when a Wetherspoons opens close by, most recently in Sheffield pubs in Hillsborough have been blighted by the Rawson Spring, and trade has suffered badly in the neighbouring pubs, as no one can compete with Wetherspoons prices. This is not happening at the Dove and Rainbow, and perhaps its a unique example of a pub next door to a Wetherspoons whose trade has felt no, or minimal impact, from the 'cheap' option next door in recent years.

No doubt this is because we are a niche market pub, whereas Wetherspoons are very mainstream. Had the Dove remained as it was in the 1980's, a typical City centre 'general' pub with no niche market appeal, it would have shut down years ago as it would have been far too similar to Wetherspoons and lost all its patrons for the cheap ale next door.

In historical interest only, when the Bankers opened in 1988 the Dove DID suffer a downward trend in turnover, being still a mainstream pub at the time, and a few years later was forced to totally re-invent itself with a major rebrand as the Tut N Shive, followed by a reborn Dove and Rainbow as an 'alternative' venue.

1988!? really wow' date=' i thought it was mid 90s..Christ time flys[/quote']

It was mid '90s - July 1996 according to the Weatherspoons info! :)

As For The Dove, it used to be my city centre 'local' but I stopped going in there on a weekend because it's too loud.

Thanks to this thread, I arranged to meet some mates in there last night but, same as the last few times, we left after one drink because the ear-bleedingly loud volume of the music means it's impossible to have a chat without shouting so it was back to the Frog & Parrot, Bungalows and Bears and Casbah which all seem to manage to have music at a volume conducive to socialising.

Such a shame because, as others have said, the staff and the beer are fantastic!

Most tell me its not loud enough!!! I am always being told to whack up the power, usually by groups of metalheads but also older people as well, including the regular aged 50 + crowd who can't get enough....unless they are all deaf!!! And we are a rock bar really so it needs to be loud and proud, just as the Nelson is at the weekends, because we kick ass:)

The beer garden is much quieter though if you dont want it so loud......

I find the volume in the Dove much preferable to that of the Nelson.

In the Dove you can have a conversation without having to shout or learn to lip read.

I know Lez's room at The Nelson was always loud but upstairs the speakers were sited high which made for a much better loud music to socialising mix. I've not been in The Nelson for a good while so haven't a clue what it's like now. It's the same set up at most of the 'alternativeish' pubs on Division Street too - hence them being busy.

As for your punters saying it's not loud enough, fair enough, but there's a lot of former regulars like me giving your pub a miss at weekends now.
