Sheffield - Strange Nacreous Clouds - February 1996

Recommended Posts

Does anyone remember the strange nacreous cloud formations seen over Sheffield in February 1996? They were the very high level ones with all sorts of mother of pearl pastel colours in them.

I remember that photos were sold at the time in local photography shops and I think also by The Star, but I can't find a photo online anywhere except for this rather poor one -

Does anyone have a better photo?

I remember them quite well Alastair although I'm afraid I don't have any photos. I understood at the time that the beautiful colours and mother of pearl effect were due to particles of ice in the clouds refracting sunlight.

Hi Alastair - at home I have some photos that I took from Wadsley, showing the nacreous clouds in the west over Bradfield. I'm on holiday in Devon at present but when I'm home at the weekend I'll see if I can find them and upload them to Photobucket. I also have a postcard that was published locally at the time; I think by Hedgerow Publishing. Here is an image from the Hedgerow online library: http://www.hedgerow.co.uk/image.php?type=general&searchstring=clouds&imgid=17124

I remember seeing the colours in the sky as I came home from work on a 14 bus - nobody on the bus knew the explanation and we couldn't understand how a "rainbow" could be in that location! Some pictures were shown on BBC's "Look North" program and a weather expert explained what nacreous clouds are, and how rarely they are seen.
