Disturbances in city?

You are of course right Spacehopper, as a Wednesdayite I most certainly agree with the statistics, but let's get back to the original subject. Yesterdays confrontations between the BBC and the Soul Crew were very predictable, both are notorious groups of young and not so young men who are out to get the reputation of having the 'Top Firm'. Yesterday about half a dozen arrests were made after what was described by the police as some of the worst football violence seen in the city for years - what hype and exaggeration is that ?

Back in the seventies hundreds would have been arrested and often were, the police and football clubs have driven the hooligan confrontations from within the grounds to the city streets where the 'casuals' and police frequently play cat and mouse for hours either to persue or prevent a punch up. Like InternetOwl wrote earlier would it not be better to allow the groups to confront each other and arrest them in the act rather than trying to prevent the disorder and arresting the 'few' that actually manage to have 'an off'. The BBC and the Soul Crew would have have been at least 300 strong each yesterday and only 6 got nicked !!

Just as an interesting footnote to the arguments about the history of the clubs, Wednesday were originally nicknamed the Blades and United were the Cutlers and of course Wednesday are the oldest professional club in Sheffield and played at Bramall Lane (which was the home of Yorkshire Cricket Club) before United were even formed !
