what's happened to the music scene?!

as i said before, i'm not referring to the likes of franz ferdinand playing at the o2 academy. my original point (which is only my opinion) is the lack of top notch local bands that are talented, put on a great show, have a good rig, etc etc. yes, there are still loads of run of the mill local original and covers bands out there

it brings up old debates about the smoking ban, price of beer, and the recession etc. i know bars/clubs that used to be packed out that have had to close in recent years because they can't afford to pay the bigger local bands because they were no longer pulling in enough punters. obviously this will have a knock on effect to the quality of bands they can hire, and the amount of money the bands earn to invest on their rig, etc etc

obviously, it depends on where you go to watch bands so it's fair enough if you don't agree... it might not have dried up everywhere

venues PAy for bands?????? Never done that before, there are stacks of really good quality BIG bands who will play for free.....most of them just want to be heard and have a stage to play on...but at the Dove we offer them a custom built and truly stunning 5+K rig with a 2K stage monitor system (awesome...no other pub does that) and a huge (quite probably the biggest PUB stage in Sheffield) proper stage plus lighting and free sound engineer....almost every band who has played here loves the stage and sound system, saying we blow the pants of the house equipment in other medium sized pubs...

.many bands email me offering ME money to let them play!!!!! ...there simply is not the money to pay bands due to greedy Pub companies and Breweries.....

I can name you lots of bands that kick ass, but the fact is you ain't listening. Sorry reading. Yes there is a recession on and equally lot of people in jobs have benefitted in lower interests and more disposable income. Like I said FREE entry is not going to break your bank balance and you should get out and see what is on offer?

I find most bands are fussed as to what equipment they play with. Big rig and the latest orange amps does not necessarily equate kick ass musicianship?

I'm not aware of that many venues paying the unsigned bands from their own resources, usually it is a small percentage of ticket sales/door take. In my experience it is the BANDS that usually take in punters to watch them, family and friends.Gigs at the Leadmill, Academy and et al are supported in such a manner by the unsigned acts. Is this really a good way to get crowds in?

What is an unsigned band?

If there is an unsigned band that has door paying FANS to watch them then there should be no problem paying the bands!:help:

it's just a pointless thread by someone who used to be in a band complaining that there's no good bands any more... I could easily name you 20 local bands across various genres that are very talented, I could also name you 5 or 6 local promoters who specialise in local band nights which are between 0-5 quid to go see...

Sheffield's music scene over the last few years has produced milburn, the monkeys, the reverend, bromheads (who'll be back soon), LMT, toddla t, r8 records and so on... what more does everyone want?!?

now if you'll excuse me I'm off to start a thread sayin I haven't been swimming for a decade but the pools in sheffield are rubbish...

You're kidding right... I think if you include the arena nearly every touring band has played sheffield in the last 12 months... what a stupid statement
I wasn't happy Sheffield was missed by AC/DC but thats a rare miss by a big band, everyone else has played sheffield

i agree with a lot of that, but i think you're referring mainly to original bands. having played in an original metal band for a number of years, i know exactly what you're saying. however, in my experience, the bands that tend to offer to pay to play at venues are generally the younger generation who are desperately trying to make an impression. personally, i don't think that a band should ever pay to play at a venue... you should be playing because you're good enough to play and not because you've slipped the venue £50 (or whatever)

besides, even if you enjoy your job, you wouldn't pay to go to work would you? i know how much of a pain it is to work full time and then have to bomb home to collect your gear, lug it all to a venue, setup, play for a few hours, take it all down, and drive home in the early hours... not to mention the petrol money! so there's no way i'd ever pay to play anywhere no matter how much you enjoyed it - it's the principle

back on topic, the bands i'm talking about would have filled venues like the DnR 10 times over 5 to 10 years ago, and wouldn't even consider playing for free. to be honest, they probably wouldn't even think about playing in a pub at all

as i said before, the likes of guns n oatcakes, whizz kid, jagged edge, alexanders palace, alcatraz, etc used to pull in big crowds in WMC's years ago, but now these sorts of bands are considering playing pub venues because of the lack of bookings and larger local venues

it's a shame imo

i'm not sure what your point is here, other than to try and start an argument. i didn't say there are no good bands, what i'm saying is the music scene appears to have dried up imo (if that's ok with you of course?)
