Ms Macbeth
Yes, I saw this and am surprised it took so long to make it on to here. Perhaps I should have posted it myself. Interesting stuff though I've actually mentioned it in a couple of threads, and posted a link from the housing press. http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showpost.php?p=5188905&postcount=
eckingtonlad
A basic report here http://www.itv.com/news/articles/immigrant-housing-priority-a-myth-597496103.html and the full report here http://www.equalityhumanrights.com/media-centre/research-finds-no-bias-in-allocation-of-social-housing/ 87.8% of people in social housing were born in the UK, and only 1.8% had moved to the UK in the last 5 years. This must be disappointing news for those who like to play the victim card and claim that British people are treated as "second class" when it comes to social housing. Clearly they aren't You try telling that to the average unemployed chav or white trailer trash on the mannor estate.
Ms Macbeth
I suggest we blame successive governments who have allowed virtually no council house building for the shortage of council housing. There, it's not that hard is it? Thats about the size of it, but it doesn't get the same reaction I find.

chem1st
You try telling that to the average unemployed chav or white trailer trash on the mannor estate. Most people on the Manor (spell it right mate, even 12 year olds who attend Myrtle Springs can do that), and surrounding areas will have seen the houses around them get demolished, Queen Mary Rd etc. they may have even helped remove the copper and slate before razing them themselves. *_ash_*
And don't forget the Tories for allowing people to buy their Council houses. Or Labour for continuing to allow it?
chem1st
If 10% of social housing tenants are foreign born, and only 8% of the UK population foreign born, whilst 88% are UK born yet make up 92% of the UK population, then there is bias, albeit small. The report mentions many things; that it excludes data of migrant populations less than 40 000. That 1/3 of the muslim population live in social housing against 1/6 of the christian population 1/13 of jews and sikhs and 1/20 of the hindu population. (No data for athiests or agnostics). A greater proportion of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Jamaican and Somali born migrants are housed in social housing than compared to UK born. It mentions media reporting has a big influence on perceptions. Also, 'All public bodies including local authorities have the statutory duty to promote good race relations as part of their race equality duty outlined in race relations (ammendment) act 2000.' - Saying this is a useful tool for public bodies to use in areas where tensions focus on migration. It concludes by reiterating certain points made earlier which 'show' migrants are not favoured, and that where there is, that it is due to prority needs and not migrant status. Considering that most properties are now let on a priority need basis, it would be interesting to see the ethnicity data and immigrant status of people whom are let properties via this route, which is not included in this report. It would also be interesting for them to define the point at which a person ceases to be an immigrant. If they are to categorize seperately immigrants whom arrived in the last 5 years, I think it would also be appropiate to have a seperate category for the 'UK born whom have become eligibile for social housing within the last 5 years',. No data from Sheffield was used, some of the data used, specifically CORE data is to be replaced this year due to its shortcomings (this data being used to determine country of birth) The data in table A2 shows the UK population demographics to be nearly identical to migrants from Germany and the Netherlands for amount over 65s and no. of children. All others having more children, except the Italians, Polish, Cyprians, Jamaicans, South Africans, Iranians and Lithuanians, migrant children whom would presumably then be counted as UK born. Only the Italians, Jamaicans and Irish having a greater number of over 65s. From reading the report I think that there is a small bias towards immigrants, but that the report could be done better. Especially by comparing only like-for-like information*. The research has been carried out by the Equality and Human Rights Commission. There can be no doubt that migration is having an effect on housing, but by far the greatest problem is the lack thereof (of housing that is). *comparing all UK born against the migrants from the last 5 years - like Teabag has in the OP and every media article I have read so far wrt this report. happyhippy
You try telling that to the average unemployed chav or white trailer trash on the mannor estate. That's part of the point though. You can tell them this, and it's dismissed, despite it being correct. You can lead a horse to water .....
