Mathom
It's just ignorant to go and sit in an area set aside for smokers and then whinge at them, a bit like someone going into a kids' play area to eat their lunch and then whinging that it's too noisy for them to enjoy reading their Proust. The funny thing is if anyone did whinge to the owners of the pub then they'd just think "Yeah? And?" because pubs are really suffering from the smoking ban, so taking sides against the smoker in the designated area is the last thing landlords are going to do! mightysimo
Fortunately, the "No-smoking in pubs and restaurants" law has put paid to that, pretty much, thank God, but, before the law came in, it was a total bane, as many eating-places allowed smoking. A non-smoker had no option but to suffer the unpleasantness of others lighting up during a meal. And, as I said, trying to eat your food through a fug of someone else's smoke, is nothing short of vile. I have no idea what your babbling at before the smoking ban, any restaurant or other eating place I went to was fine, because they had designated smoking and non smoking areas and I could not see or smell any indication of anyone smoking and this is at various places over the country over a fair few years. You must go to the pits to eat if you have such a bad experiance...you have also not seen andrejaun's good example: A bit like sitting on the M1 with a picnic and complaining about the traffic. I don't think so wake up and join the real world PT
BasilRathbon
Far from making your eating experience unpleasant, recent research has shown that cigarette smoke actually enhances it. This is because smoking a cigarette stimulates the taste buds, thus making them more receptive to the tast and flavour of the food you subsequently eat. Indeed, just like some conneisseurs like to match the type of food they eat with wine, many food experts recommend trying different types of tobacco with food; eg Mellow Virginia with white fish or Old Holborn with red meat. mightysimo
strange, that... I don't ever recall, in the real world, someone else drinking wine of whatever colour choking someone else, and affecting their breathing...? Wow, sarcasm...If you read my post correctly I was using it as an example...and I said becuase I DIDNT LIKE THE COLOUR not because it chokes people! Lets use andrejuan's example then A bit like sitting on the M1 with a picnic and complaining about the traffic. If you have such a view of smokers then when you leave the house you better start knocking on people car/van/lorry drivers windows as you walk/cycle past as you shouldn't use a car and ask them to turn off their engines so the engine fumes don't choke you while you walk past. Oh yes and you better tell your electricity provider to stop burning coal, oil and gas to provide your electricity, you better not buy anything from shops as lorry's transport them and their fumes are polluting 'your air' lets not forget everything else thats used in the modern world that produces emissions from their production... In fact while your at it you better go live in the woods as a recluse
beer
There is a clear large sign at the pub that I am referring to which says "Smoking Area" . At the time when the smoking ban was introduced, the people who run the pub realised that lots of people still smoke and in an effort to reduce the loss of custom they built an area outside the pub specifically for smokers. It is a lovely sheltered spot with a huge parasol, purpose built for SMOKERS. Of course Non Smokers may use the area too but may NOT complain about smoking in an area that was SPECIFICALLY built for smokers. I feel that the problem at this specific pub is that the area is a lovely place to sit in during the summer and affords shelter from the heat of the sun. I feel that a minority, but NOT all customers envy it and attempt to unsmokify it. I shall, like all other smokers continue to puff away in this area whether non smoking diners like it or not. If it was not for smokers the area would never have been built! I do NOT care if the non smokers are dining or not, if they dont like it they can go sit elsewhere! I fear that with an attitude like yours, smokers would be forced out of pub grounds altogether and even more would close down. The smoking ban has killed off far too many pubs AND peoples businesses and jobs as it is! You are just making this up. It is an attitude like yours that brought about the smoking ban in the first place.
