The Wagon's Wheels @ The Grapes on Wednesday August 26th is quite frankly going to be a belter. Making a very welcome return will be Nottingham 'supergroup' The Cold Light Of Day. Taking a break from their own monthly residency at The Grapes to join us will be the latest incarnation of Dave Woodcock & The Dead Comedians. Finally we're also delighted to have singer/songwriter Mark Wynn back with us. Doors open at 8pm and entry is just £3.

***THE COLD LIGHT OF DAY***

The Cold Light Of Day is a Nottingham 'supergroup' of sorts, put together by Richard Warren and Huw Costin, who have each tasted success as members of The Hybirds/Echoboy and Earth The Californian Love Dream. The pair teamed up last summer and started to work on each other's songs. From their wish list of who they thought would make a great band, they recruited Echoboy's former Hammond player Lee Horsley, drummer Jeffrey Davenport once of The Chettles and Jim Widdop on pedal steel guitar.

"We're drawing on a lot of soul and country," says Richard of the band's sound. "Like Neil Young and Crazy Horse. We're trying to step as far away from indie because it's so uninspiring."

Flashes of feedback guitar, spots of crying steel, stripes of soulful piano, smeared with machine-gun rhythm. Electrifying country punk which tells tales of loneliness and heartbreak, but cod americana this ain't They blend a traditional noise with a lyrical pride for their forefathers' struggle on the coal fields of the midlands, and paint spaced, jet-lag desert scenes with beauty and fury. There is anger and bitterness here too. Anger? Loneliness? Heartbreak? Pride? It's what great records are made of.

***DAVE WOODCOCK & THE DEAD COMEDIANS***

Dave Woodcock is a singer-songwriter based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. His songs deal unflinchingly with love and its consequences - happiness, unhappiness, loss, loneliness and drinking. He used to front alt rock folk country blues punks Taste of Shotgun before going solo combining all his influences to create something unique.

Woodcock has been compared favourably with the likes of Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Lou Reed and Joe Strummer - with reviewers commenting,

"Blinding....Dave has an onstage presence which few can touch, naturally laid back and cool, straight out of a Clint Eastwood movie" (soundaloud.com)

and praising his "truly genuine songs of love and drink" (unsigned sheffield).

More recently he brought together a fine collection of musicians from the Sheffield music scene to form The Dead Comedians. After various line up changes over the last couple of years, Dave says he's now found the line up "that just feels RIGHT." Chris Murphy, a noted singer/songwriter in his own right, has taken over piano duties, there is Andrew Wood (Pisco Sour Hour) on drums and Lee Bradley (Viva High Rollers) on bass. The most recent addition is guitarist Chris Saunders. There is a new album due very soon.

***MARK WYNN***

A veteran of 5 bands, including notably Hijack Oscar and Boss Caine, Mark Wynn is now heading out on his own. Mark played an excellent solo set back in March when promoting his debut solo EP of blues edged country, steeped in the influence of the likes of Townes Van Zandt and Steve Earle. He's currently writing and rehearsing with his band for his debut album which is due out later this year.

This'll be tonight then. Cold Light Of Day joint frontman Richard Warren is away touring with Soulsavers so they're going to be doing this gig as a three piece of acoustic guitar, pedal steel and piano. Mark Wynn is going to have his band in tow so it all still adds up to a cracking night, from 8...
