Andy C
There are lots of good pubs in Sheffield, however which is best depends on what you are after, or what mood you are in. There are a number of pubs which are simple and cosy, and offer a good range of real ales if you fancy trying different beers - these include the Museum, the Bath Hotel, the Rutland, the Red Deer, the Kelham Island Tavern and the Fat Cat. Then there is the Grapes, which whilst the pub itself isn't anything special, it often has bands on in the upstairs rooms, and there is normally a good atmosphere on gig nights. There is the two genuine Irish pubs - the Dog & Partridge and Fagans - these are traditional pubs run by Irish people, and the Irish expat community can be found drinking and having a good time in both. A good atmosphere can usually be experienced. In the Dog there is often live music provided by a random bloke with a guitar sat in the corner! There are various chain pubs on West Street that are marketed directly at students, these are generally busy, have pool tables, and have discount card schemes and other promotions for students. The Dove & Rainbow also deserves a mention, a fairly unique instution, a fairly 'punk' pub. It's a bit run down and tatty, but that seems to be deliberate. It has a pool table, table football, a caravan based DJ box and leopard skin seat covers. There are pubs that have permanantly low prices - the Brown Bear (a Sam Smiths pub) and Bankers Draft/Lloyds No1/Swim Inn/Wetherspoons (JD Wetherspoons pubs). There are the big cavernous pubs which show sport on the big screen such as Old Monk and Walkabout. There are also the more stylish/chilled bars such as Muse or Riverside. I could continue.... Guest
bars wise. You get chilled out bars such as Trippets, Tequilla and Takapuna all around the same area. There are the trendy bars such as the Forum and The Halcyon, RSVP, and Sola Clubs. Student nights on Monday. Loads of people go to Gatecrasher 1 (Republic) and its cheap. Also Corporation is meant to be good on Mondays. Tuesday Club at Sheffield Uni on erm Tuesday. I think the Leadmill has a student night as well (cheese). several others throughout the week. weekend wise: Zero : Urban Gorilla is good on Fridays (chilled/relaxed) Kingdon : Cheese Gatecrasher 1 - Friday is kids night with the normally dance music expected in what considers itself a good club. Leadmill : Cheesy/indie Corporation: Rock night (newer stuff) on Fridays. old rock on Saturdays.
