An observation from a non-Sheffielder

Recommended Posts

To me, the exact reason I moved to Sheffield is that it has the facilities of a big city but still feels like a town. Sheffield never feels like it will overwhelm me, unlike London, Leeds, Manchester etc.

Just my two pence !

Does it even matter at all?

Does it matter how big Sheffield is?

Well, when the statistic that Sheffield is 4th largest city in the country is presented as fully representative of some kind of truth ... and then someone who has travelled comes to Sheffield, and can compare from first hand experience, well ... it doesn't stack up. At best outsiders may wonder if Sheffielders have actually been elsewhere and compared for themselves?

At worst others may think that Sheffielders are wilfully trying to decieve them. People don't like being lied to. My reaction was "there's something wrong with that stat". There are less favourable reactions to those who misrepresent the whole truth.

Sheffield 4th largest city? That's not the full truth is it? If that claim is to mean anything, ... well, the city has to do more, achieve more, believe in itself more.

9th largest? Friendly people? A short bike ride from great countryside? Excellent!

You come to Sheffield because you want to see what it's like or you already live there.

You stay in Sheffield because you like it.

If you hate Sheffield and 'it's size' you leave.

The End. :)

Exactly! Nobody round here said they hated Sheffield did they? I certainly didn't! http://www.q2do.com/Quotes/QuotesDisplay.aspx?QuoteCategoryID=4&QuoteSubCategoryID=32#304

You seem to be measuring two things. Size of various cities, and size of various conurbations. Sheffield being the 4th biggest city by population, and by definition of what a city is would seem to be accurate. Is it the 4th biggest conurbation? No, no one said it was. If people don't undertstand this - well that's there problem and doesn't alter anything either way.

Whether anyone cares is another point.

no i'm not having a laugh. and i said nearly on par. the development in leeds over the past 5 years has been staggering and if the lumiere tower project gets underway that will be very impressive. having stayed in canary wharf on many occasions obviously that is a complete mile ahead and so it should be. but i don't expect a lot of acceptance on a sheffield forum tbh so i'll let you have you victory...

Be honest though - 90% of the developments in Leeds are to a VERY poor design standard. It has happened far too quick and subsequently, the skyline looks like some 5 year old who'd spent an hour or so with a lego set.

Without reading back through all the posts above, maybe Sheffield doesn't have such a 'big city' feel because of the quantity and expanse of it's green spaces - and this, to me - and many others, makes this city unique and a hell of a lot more pleasant a place to live.

Sheffield has the perfect balance of urban development against green space.

Whichever way you look at it - it's not nearly on par with London, however much development Leeds has had.
