Anyone grow up in the Smithywood crescent, Woodseats road area in the fifties? I am trying to find out if anyone knows why Smithywood Crescent was renamed from Whitehouse Crescent, this must have happened around the turn of the 19th/20th century, anyone help? Also any old friends who grew up in this area.

Possibly because there was a road with a similar name elsewhere in the city? Bramall Lane was originally Whitehouse Lane, and the Moor was originally South Street, but there was another South Street at Park, and another Whitehouse Lane somewhere, so the names were changed to avoid confusion.

Thanks but I think Smithywood Crescent as is it now was once 2 streets one smithywood and the other whitehouse crescent, my grandads parents , on my mothers side, lived on whitehouse crescent, Woodseats. It is my mother, who,s 92 bless her, who says whitehouse crescent was changed to Smithywood Cres. My granddad on my fathers side, they lived on Smithywood Cres. Too many Crescents I quess?
