West Indies via Sheffield Canal

I'm not sure whether it is my imagination but I seem to remember that a Jamaican immigrant living in Sheffield decided to build a boat to sail back to Jamaica. Being a welder he built the boat of steel plate.

On the day of the launch into the Sheffield canal, and before the press and television news, a crane was used to lower it into the canal, unfortunately, according to my memory, the boat just kept going down and down until it reached the bottom of the canal. It wouldn't float. Does any one else remember this or was it just a story?
