Anyone got an MG tf?

Recommended Posts

The reason I bought a MGTF over an MX5, is my new ‘to me’ TF is an 04 plate with only 27,000 miles on the clock & looks like new, for the same price I paid for it I was looking at shabby S reg MX5’s with over 100,000 miles on the clock.
Fair point, but thorough research on sites like pistonheads (for instance) or regularly checking specialist forums like the MX5 owners club's will often yield late Mk1 (R reg, 97/98 ) and early Mk2 (S/T, 98/00) with fully documented, 99.99% sound, sub-60k mileagers in the OP's ballpark figure ;)

I checked a lot of these over the past month to estimate how much mine's worth re. how much to insure it for at renewal: 98 R Mk1, UK car, 1.8i, Ltd edition (400 made), 2nd owner from nearly new (last 9 years), 53k fully-documented since new ...£3,500 on a good day.

the mgf's boot was more or less useless anyway, because it always got damp and didn't smell very nice (so i'd never use it for clothes or shopping etc anyway). i think it was something to do with condensation coming from the engine and exhaust but i could be wrong. either way, it never got any use

I think it's a bit of leakage through the rear light cluster. Easily fixed in an hour by removing the lights, clearing out all the rubbish that accumulates in there and then a bit of silicone sealant.

It's little jobs like this on the MGF that I liked doing. Or fixing the failed heater setting with a bit of curly wire!

The only 1 true MG fault on my car in the six years it's been on the road is an annoying leak from the soft top caused by compression in the seals.

Any other problems are just wear and tear maintenance - saying that i have on '07 Laguna and it still has the recurring issue with the stop/start from early models.

Hi,

I was just wondering whether anybody knew the year that the faulty batch of MG TF's were made (head gasket problems mentioned in a post at the top of page 1)? and what year it would be safe to buy from to avoid the headgasket problem.

I infact just read a respose that I got from a seller telling me about the head gasket about to go on the MGF I'd enquired about.

I had my heart set on a MG TF but do not want huge bills, as my current car is 100% perfect, just not a convertible!

Thanks.

they are back in production and you can buy a brand new one. rover never 'cured' the hgf problem. if you get a second hand one check the coolant levels regularly, first sign of any coolant loss get to a garage. inlet manifold gasket a common place for an internal leak that is difficult to spot.

I called in at the MG showroom aat Longbridge a couple of months ago and chatting with a sales guy there he informed me that they were NOT back in production and that at that time there were 22 left in the dealership chain which had been assembled from the parts left over. They were being sold incredibly cheap compared to say an MX5. It was their intention to bring out a new sports car but not for a couple of years yet. What he has got in the showroom was a prototype of the new 3 series small saloon which was fantastic even though it hadn't got an engine in it but it just sat there on 20" wheels looking like the car that MG Rover should have made.

There was no particular year or batch for the head gasket going it happens thought-out the whole range.

My 2004 TF had HGF (head gasket failure) at 28,000 miles so I had the new up-rated gasket fitted there is no reports of these gaskets failing any more than any other car now.

My car has done 34,000 miles now and it has been totally reliable.

It just happens I’m about to sell it soon I was going to hang-on till spring till I put it for sale but if your interested PM me ;)

The size of the engine plays a part. The 1.6 was pretty much bullet proof - I owned a 1.6 TF and never had a single mechanical problem with it. The 1.8 vvt engine had a reputation for having more problems with hgf but again, I used to own a 200 series with the same engine and never had any problems with the head gasket.

Theres a lot of nonsence spoken about Rover group cars and HGFs. I'vve owned 3 and never had an issue, and I've known plenty of other people who have owned Rovers and I haven't known anyone to actually have a HGF. Corsas on the other hand....

ditto to this. If your'e buying one allocate £350 and get it done when needed.

I still have a tf(refuse to sell it) and recently bought a Freelander, with the same engine.
