Thewickerman
i can see some sheffielders being offended at paying more than £2 for the beer though (its not quite there yet, but will be soon). there are actually plenty of quiet sam smiths pubs in london too. Aye but at least it's not that flat and watery Fullers London Pride stuff costing around £4 a pint at St Pancras is it!

BritishProud
The Pub trade is dead because of the brewery owners grabbing too much money of the pub landlord/lady, i mean what is it, your looking at 500 - 700 a week just to rent the building of the brewery, that's why pint prices are so high and because of the prices being so high, it puts customers off!!! And because of the government banning smoking in public places, that also put most people off, cause lets face it everyone like a good smoke with theire pint!!!!! I've a friend in the trade with 2 pubs. He's managing to hold his own despite the high brewery costs and the smoking ban (which has not affected trade by the way). He does ok because he treats his customers with respect, doesn't allow swearing, no Sky TV and sells decent cask conditioned ale. He takes pride in the appearance of his pub, decor, cleaning, glasses and allows customers to inspect his cellar. All beers have a tapped and vented/best before date on display. The duty charges just have to be accepted. By the way, you're obviously an ignoramus to think everyone likes a smoke with a pint.
gypsyjojo
i have worked behind bars most my adult life and still do i love it and i think it's a combination of everything mentioned before high rents, brewery ties, credit crunch, smoking ban (especially in winter) but it could also be the fact that town is only catering for the under 25's these day's so any one older than that chooses somewhere local and it's usually a W.M.C as these are the cheapest. i think the "local" doesn't stand a chance unless you do food, sky tv, live tribute acts etc.... but all these have to have a seperate a liscence to do and they are really expensive so if you are struggling coz of slow turn over something has to give and it's usually the landlord.... good luck to all of you still fighting the fight

Shocking business even before the ban try telling that to the smoking brigade that feel the ban is to blame for pub closures.
