Old public convenience at Nether Green..tram termius?

Could be my old eyes, but I cannnot see any sign of tramlines on this picture, unless the terminus was slightly lower at the bottom of Tom lane.

Wikipedia for what it's worth states that the Fulwood Rd section closed between 1925-1936:

More interestingly, I found these pictures on Picture Sheffield which show that there was indeed a tram terminus in Nethergreen. It looks like it didn't go much further than the Nethergreen Road junction, maybe just up to where the old toilets are which would backup the passerby that Grace mentioned in the OP.

Several of the old public toilets appear to be being turned into sandwich shops. ... I don't care how well they've been scrubbed, I just don't fancy their sarnies. :-p

The gents' toilet that used to be at the corner of Forbes Road and Langsett Road was incorporated into the adjacent "Bangla Cottage" restaurant. No doubt the former toilet was well scrubbed and disinfected, but if any of the diners there knew what it used to smell like, it might put them off their food...:gag:.. Here it is

As Ousetunes mentioned, a public convenience could often be found at a tram terminus. Tram crews certainly used the gents-only one that used to be at Malin Bridge. You went down some steps at the corner of Holme Lane and Rivelin Valley Road (next to Burgon & Ball). It was demolished when the ladies-and-gents toilets opened nearby. Needless to say, these closed long ago and were recently demolished as part of the ongoing flood control work there.

I remember in the 3o's,that trams went on to Fulwood, and that was the terminus.

Although I most certainly wasn't there, I'm sure the trams terminated at the fork for Brooklands Avenue and Brookhouse Hill prior to Fulwood Church. I also think trams ran on this (electrified) line until they were taken off the roads (late fifties?).

And didn't there used to be some public conveniences at this terminus, too?

I have a 1954 timetable that doesn't mention trams going to Nether Green or Fulwood, so I imagine buses had taken over by then (in case it's of interest here's a scan)

The last of the "old" Sheffield trams ran from Millhouses to Tinsley one rainy night in October 1960 - I was on one of them!

That confirms something I vaguely recollect my grandfather saying many years ago. He lived on Brookhouse Hill in one of the Goole Green cottages opposite Canterbury Avenue and I'm sure he said the trams came right up to there at one time.

Not quite, the trams turned right off Fulwood Rd onto Canterbury Ave just before the Church. The out of town line crossed over just before the brow of the hill (Where the existing Church Complex entrance is). The toilets were at the end of Canterbury Ave, next to the War memorial and were demolished about 20-25 years ago.

So what is it going to be then Grace?

It's going to be my studio and workshop. My workbench will be behind in the window in the left bay so that people can see me working...this might mean that I'll have to be a little tidier!:D

Dont forget to wave to me when youre passing by or waiting for the bus...
