simonj
Not quite, the trams turned right off Fulwood Rd onto Canterbury Ave just before the Church. The out of town line crossed over just before the brow of the hill (Where the existing Church Complex entrance is). The toilets were at the end of Canterbury Ave, next to the War memorial and were demolished about 20-25 years ago. I nearly mentioned that myself but I couldn't be sure of the facts. Thanks for confirming it Mike. My memories of it would more than likely be linked to being at the old Fulwood Infants school in the late 60's/early 70's. mike142sl
It's going to be my studio and workshop. My workbench will be behind in the window in the left bay so that people can see me working...this might mean that I'll have to be a little tidier! Dont forget to wave to me when youre passing by or waiting for the bus... OK, Look out for someone disguised as a paramedic on a large scooter. Next question - what do you make in your studio? bus man
Generally speaking it was policy for ther to be toilets at tram terminus (Beachief hotel, Sheffield Lane Top or time points (Abbey Lane School) Around five years ago sheffield cc did a review of public toilets and a lot of the old ones were shut as they needed a lot of money spending on them especialy to bring them up to disabled standard . Some of those listed fo closure survived ie foxhouse and Bradfield
grace h
Next question - what do you make in your studio? I design and make knives. Almost exclusively little folding pocket knives but I do repairs, 'specialist need' commissions and kitchen knife/scissor sharpening too. You can see some pictures of my work here... http://www.gracehorne.co.uk/
simonj
So what is it going to be then Grace? I got this link from another thread about said Nethergreen toilets. It tells you all about it and gives welcome publicity for Grace http://www.sheffieldtelegraph.co.uk/news/Grace-finds-a-convenient-location.5264597.jp?articlepage=

Excellent - I'll have to get you to come and talk to the scouts at the top of the hill sometime - don't believe everything you read in the press about not allowing knives. grace h
Do pop by...I was was talking to Dave Budd about the Daily Mail's Scout article the other day. It is my deep desire to reclaim knives as useful tools.
grace h
A little dig in the library yesterday revealed that the last bit of the tram line up to Nethergreen, was opened on Oct 14 1901. As yet, no comfirmation of a connection between the tram company and the toilet.
hillsbro
I just looked in the souvenir brochure "The Tramway Era in Sheffield" which was produced by Sheffield Transport Department when the last trams ran in October 1960. This gives an opening date of 14 May 1904 for the section from Hangingwater Road to Nether Green, and closing dates of 22 August 1936 and 5 January 1952 for the routes to Fulwood via Broomhill and Hunters Bar respectively. Here are scans showing some of the opening dates and the closing dates.
grace h
Thank you for that. There also looked like there was a line through Broomhill to Nethergreen. Do you happen to have opening dates for that too?
