Motor car - do you remember your first one?

Recommended Posts

My first car was a green Cortina, coloum change reg no 271 JWA (everyone always remembers their first car's reg)

I passed my test August 1968 @ 2.30 my first accident was 2 hours later showing of.

Next car was a Ford Corsaia, numb until the crossply tyres wer changed to the new radials, fitted with "Solex Wing Mirrors" then to a Riley elf, that didn't last long. Then it was a red Mini Cooper UKU 608, but after 6 months me and the M1 at Tinsley did not agree, they always said you can not turn a cooper, but if you fall asleep at the wheel no chance.

Then it was the Escort great car but it did not like the cold or water. In 1972 a new Company car the Avenger, what a load of rubbish.

Old M reg 1974 VW Jeans Beetle.

It had been modified so that the "Jeans" interior had been ripped out, and they had stuck a massive whale tail on the back.

It was in neglected red and bog standard 1300cc engine. The heating pipes had been removed so it was permanently cold.

I had stripped back to metal and resprayed in Battleship grey wings with bright pink bonnet, roof, doors and tail. Add on chrome running boards and it looked awesome!:gag:

The big end went after 2 months, so the engine had a complete rebuild using a campervan engine and parts off a porsche engine! It suddenly became very quick!

On one trip to Rotherham, Iin the middle of winter, I had to pull over at Thorpe Hesley to scrape the ice off the windscreen ....... from the inside!

Great car, happy days.

Jim
