the_wicker
//ROUGH DISKO present THE 5TH BIRTHDAY THROWDOWN with COOLY G (Hyperdub, London) PIPES (Kabal, Sheffield) + ROUGH DISKO DJS FRIDAY 2ND OCTOBER THE HARLEY 10PM-4AM TAX: £3 (free b4 11pm) Five years ago Rough Disko was born, the digital offspring of four gin-for-blood chancers armed with the stupidest DJ names in South Yorks. Early raves were often disorganized affairs that culminated in us waking the next day in parks or graveyards, or underneath parked cars. Forward to autumn 2009 and we're mightily psyched to still be laying it down every month. Along the way we've partied in disused works, red light district rehearsal rooms, basements and a revamped 1960s casino, putting on the likes of Kissy Sell Out, Crystal Castles, Zombie Disco Squad, Mowgli, Kanji Kinetic, Scott Cooper and Isa GT, whilst repping the locality with the cream of Steel City talent: Toddla T, Oris Jay, RunHideSurvive, Bozzwell, Squire of Gothos, Darlings of the Splitscreen, Up & Atom, Ross Orton and Sophie Toes. We've hosted some of the city's most destructive warehouse sessions over at Yellow Arch studios alongside our cohorts from GO! Magazine and C90, and the national press from iDJ Magazine to The Guardian have hyped us as one of the best underground club nights in the UK. So to celebrate this coming of age we are squaring up London's freshest against Sheffield's finest. Hailing from Brixton, COOLY G is the blazing star of the UK Funky scene who's been tenting the trousers of everyone from FACT magazine to the NME, who recently put her in their Future 50 for the coming year. Snapped up by Hyperdub head honcho Kode 9 on the strength of her self-released output, Cooly swiftly knocked out the instant classic Narst / Love Dub 12" back in June. With hype levels in the red and new material ready to drop, this'll be your last chance to see her flexing in a venue this size. Expect elements ranging from tribal and techy house to grime, garage and dubstep, mixing in her own sweetly chopped vocals...DO NOT MISS!!! Facing off on the night and needing little introduction will be hometown boy PIPES, making a rare appearance away from his residency at the clandestine Kabal warehouse parties. One third of the legendary DJ tag team there, and long-time mentor to Toddla T, this man lays claim to ownership of the lowest frequencies in town. If you've never been to Kabal, make ready for bassline, digital dancehall, jump-up and all flavours of booty-damaging re-rubs, delivered to a sweating floor. As always the RD rezzies will be laying the table and cleaning up the mess at the end with a hot blend of jackin' house, baile funk, ghettotech, 2-step, electro and acid. And being the same ruthless businessmen as we were back in the oh-4, the soiree will set you back all of three pounds. Can't say fairer than that, hmmmm? See you down the front.
