Which is the best second hand car dealer??

Further to Mr Grumpy, I am also having a very bad experience with Younges of Sheffield. I bought a car from them in July 2011 for £3000. Again, it looked the part, but it also needed a new rear tyre. However this was little compared to the string of faults I experienced later.

When I took the car to a dealer to have work done (a separate issue), I was told during an inspection that there was "dangerous" fault with my front suspension - the lower bush had been fitted the wrong way round and the coil springs were mismatched. I contacted Younges of Sheffield, asking to speak to Steve Younge, but I couldn't speak to him, and have never done throughout the whole process I will go on to explain. I called, sent letters, gave ultimatums, but nothing. The car was off the road for over a month before I was forced to send three independent quotes for repair and then pay for the car to be fixed myself (around £550). There was also another fault with the wheel bearing discovered at this time (a further £100) and then the costs incurred for having the car off the road, not to mention the inconvenience. Having paid out this amount of money, I took legal action against Younges of Sheffield Ltd, but they did not turn up at court. (In the meantime, I found out that both my rear brake cylinders had exploded, but there was little I could do at this time apart from pay the money to get them fixed). Anyway, now armed with a court ruling, I tried to claim the money for Younges of Sheffield Ltd, but to no avail. I therefore decided to pay for the bailiffs and as soon as they were involved, an employee was very quick to respond that the company was not Younges of Sheffield Ltd (although Steve Younge owned this company and had it registered at the same address before Companies House dissolved it in July 2012 ) but were rather Younges of Sheffield. So to cut a long story short, I have still to claim back my money (nearly £1000 including legal & bailiff fees) and I bought the car over a year ago. Mr Grumpy, I would love to hear how you are getting on; maybe it was because of their ongoing experience with me that they made you sign the receipt, because they didn't ask me to do that when I bought my car.

Dont buy from any of them, they all charge way over the odds and only offer a months guarantee, and this is insurance based.Buy private, let A.A or R.A.C check the vehicle and do an indemnity check.Buy a warranty if you wish and get your own finance if you want it.You will be quids in.

The most sensible answer of the lot.

Dongle, I appreciate it is rather confusing; I bought the car from Younges of Sheffield, however internet research suggested that the company I bought the car from was called "Younges of Sheffield Ltd", since 1) this company existed in July 2011, 2) it was registered by the owner of Younges of Sheffield, Steve Younge, and 3) it was registered at the company address 720 Penistone Road.

Max / Speedway, I whole-heartedly endorse your advice, as this is what I will be doing in the future. I didn't think I could afford to go to a dealer with £3G buying my first car, and didn't think finance was wise with a student loan. Live and learn.

  • 2 months later...
Malin bridge carriage company dealt with them a few times . Very good

This has changed hands now.The bloke that runs it now used to trade as E.B cars, then Stocksbridge Motor company.his name is Emil Berek or something similar.A mate had a bad do with him at E.B cars but have not heard anything else about him.his cars never looged very good at Stocksbridge.

Many years ago (10), I bought a second hand Escort from Carr Motors at Shalesmoor. Within a couple of days it was puthering black smoke all over the place. Took it back and the garage owner was really apologetic ... he said he'd only just got the car on the day I bought it (P/ex) and hadn't checked it. He then gave me a courtesy car (much better than the Escort) and said he'd get it (Escort) fixed. In the end, he had to replace the cylinder head and loads of other stuff ... manifold, pump etc, which cost him as much as I'd paid for the car in the first place! (I saw the bills)

He said that he was very sorry for the inconvenience he'd caused and gave the car back to me with a full tank of fuel and a complete valet! Ended up being completely reliable for the four years I had it!

So ... Carr Motors gets my vote!
