School Uniform - Are you for or against?

I did a quick search but couldn't find anything, so I started this one (if there was a similar thread and I missed it, I'm sure somebody could do a merge...)

So there is a debate in another section around the recent Star article where children were sent home from school for not obeying the rules (which some people viewed as too strict) on the uniform.

 

To avoid being told off for going off the original topic, I thought I'd start this thread to ask, following on from that topic, what people thought about school uniforms in general. Are they a good thing, are they a bad thing, are they necessary, should they be abolished, and do they do the job that they are claimed to be there for?

we never had a uniform at school, but i was always being told to take my trousers OUT of my Dr martin boots

my kids up here have to wear uniforms, i think all the schools up here have a uniform

Me neither. I've never seen an argument that convinced me of their necessity.

 

I voted for "private schools" and "optional but not compulsory", although my wording makes those slightly contradictory (but I can't go back and change my poll, oh well).

I went to King Edwards VII, still one of the best schools in Sheffield, and still doesn't have a uniform as far as I know.

As I understand this ...School uniforms were brought in to bring classlessness into the schools....so that the reality was everbody was dressed the same from the same suppliers...this to stop the wealthier families sending their children to school better dressed than children from poorer families.

Also the idea of the uniform was so that children from a particular scool were easily recognisable If they committed a crime going to or coming from school.

And lastly a school uniform should give the pupils a sense of pride in the wearing of it.
