Some people complain about the cost issues of school uniforms, but surely it would be more expensive to buy our kids fashionable clothing that they will insist on having for school.

Also, uniforms are a good 'leveler', it takes away the fashion hierarchy in the playground.

I only wore a school unifrom for about 3 years in total. I agree with them though, I think they make the kids look smart, any kids causing trouble - its easy to detect which school they attend, and I do think it gives a sense of pride in the school. Plus it saves all the hassle of fashionable / expensive clothes, and the what to wear debate in the mornings.

I dont like it when they insist on 'certain' blazers that cost a lot though. My kids (primary school) have the usual jumper / cardi, white polo shirt, grey / black trousers thing and thats just right, especially now that supermarkets do affordable versions.

But surely parents who cave in to pester power to buy the latest fashions will still be doing that as their children will only be wearing school uniform for school. So they'll end up forking out even more for clothes.

Hmm, yeah but school is where most kids do there socialising with other kids, so school would just be a daily fashion parade, you'l find yourself having to buy even more clothes for them than normal.

But why? Surely you'd need five outfits per week for school if they wore their "civvies". Whereas you'd need ten outfits per week if they had a school uniform

I don't really mind what official policy is - I file it in my big Nowt To Do With Me folder :)

Personally, I like the idea of work/school uniform. I love clothes, but anything that saves time having to put together outfits in the morning is a Good Thing.

But it HAS to look good on me, of course :P .

So white shirt, black skirt, blazer, yes. Anything looking like the latest Newcastle United third strip, no.

What do you do when somebody isn't there to make the choice for you....?

I'm in the "other" bracket:

Schools should have a dress code, but not a strict uniform.

My sentimants too. I dont mind the fact they do but I question the motives for doing so and am firmly against the disiplining of kids for such a stupid point as not being a clinicle example of what someone expects them to be. We should encorage individuality as this makes people what they are and some of the greatest steps forward we have made have been by people that dont conform to everyday thinking.

Also ticking "Other" as I think that it has its pro's and cons.
