Lost sports grounds

The Waterworks ground at Crookes was called the Hadfield Sports Ground as it was on top of the Hadfield reservoir. In the 1970's the Sheffield Corporation Waterworks had a really good team that played in the old Yorkshire League. Yorks Water also had a team that played there in the Sheffield Sunday Sports League for a number of years.

I have played on the pitch a few times in inter departmental games and it was lovelly to play on.

Realise this topic is a little old but anyone with info on the old sports ground in Handsworth now the Parsley Hay estate behind Laverack Street, Handsworth Top & Richmond Road. As kids we knew it as The Orchard.

Who's sports ground was it / dates / any pics?

Hi Tim

If you haven't already done so, try Sheffield history forum,

Someone on there may be able to help.

I am interested in compiling a list of sports grounds - particularly cricket and football - which have disappeared over the last fifty years or so. No doubt there are some grounds which belonged to businesses which have subsequently closed

Those that spring readily to mind include:

King Edwards playing fields at Whiteley Wood (now given over to horses!)

YMCA pitches on Crimicar Lane (altho these are now being returned to sporting use)

Crookes WMC (now houses)

Den Bank

The ground at the junction of Dore Road and the road to Owler Bar

There must be many many more.

Where the Parkway is on either side of Prince of Wales Rd were several football pitches, and a vast area of open land, all lost just for the car.

Does anyone know where Heeley Amateurs FC played their home matches? They were members of the Yorkshire League in the Sixties & Seventies but that's all I really know about them. Did they have their own ground, or just rent someone else's?

I played with Heeley Amateurs 1976/7ish, used to run from Tramways on London Road and played home games at Dinnington Miners Welfare, 3 men and a dog was our usual gate. I think the second team played at Killamarsh Miners Welfare.
