FACT #1: Jacob Cook was a victualler on Burgess Street, Sheffield in the year 1797.

 

FACT #2: The pub that Jacob kept (The Yorkshireman's Arms) is now known as The Lions Lair, home to Cargo's Halloween Special.

 

LEGEND: 213 year old pub The Lions Lair is still haunted by Jacobs ghost to this day?

{ The Haunting of Jacob Cook }

 

It's 1797 on Burgess Street

And a likely soul you're about to meet.

 

A man whose life cut far too short,

The Reaper came via vessel and Port.

 

But this tale is not of the briny deep,

A soul lost merely in boozy weep.

 

Deep in the myriad of Yorkshire cobbles,

Across Barkers Pool where the drunkards hobble.

 

Our subject kept house at The Yorkshiremans Arms,

And this is where he began with his qualms.

 

For he was haunted in his beloved tavern,

By the beshackled ghost of 'Steely Mavern'.

 

Steely helped build the grand new pub,

But a fall from the roof had him eaten by grubs.

 

Cook was tormented by Steely's soul,

Until he dug out his final hole.

 

The publican drank his own bar dry,

And soon enough had no tears left to cry.

 

His life had taken a terrible turn,

So he boozed himself into a premature urn.

 

His tormented soul now walks up and down,

The Lions Lair bar wearing a sorrow frown.

 

So we invite you all on Hallows Eve,

To join in the fun, and never to grieve.

 

So dust off your costume, whats left to be said?

Get down to The Lair and DANCE WITH THE DEAD!

Fancy dress is optional but encouraged. All Cargo boys and girls will be turning out in full costume so why not join in with us all.

 

Previous Cargo events this year have had the Lair at capacity so be sure to make it down before the witching hour!

Seriously though its deep house / techno... We're doing a night with Urban Gorilla and Sulphate next Friday at the Earl so you can get a feel for what we're about then...
