That sounds like the 'vagrant cells' which were used for homeless men.

The building has now been demolished I believe although the high perimeter wall of the hospital where the door was is still there.

It might be interesting to see if the bricked up doorway is still visible.

In reply to your question, Where did the name come from?

 

In the days of coaches travelling through the area it was known as Furze Hill, this was after the number of Gorse bushes that grew in the area.

 

Later the name became Firs Hill and Fir Vale.
