I wrote this poem recently in memory of our granddaughter who sadly died at the age of just 8 days old on the 8th September 2009. I am running a fundraising appeal to raise funds to get a memorial bench sited at the Hutcliffe wood cemetery for all grieving parents, if you would like to help with a small donation please pm me for ways to help or send a donation to G and M Lunts Ltd, Funeral Directors at 1 - 3 Camping lane, Woodseats.

OUR FIRST GRANDCHILD

Life can be so unpredictable!

That’s what my father used to say,

And Monday 31st August 2009

Was supposed to be just another day.

But our daughter Katy surprised us all,

When she called early in the morn.

To say she was going into hospital

Because her baby wanted to be born.

It was a total shock and surprise,

Her due date wasn’t even near.

She was 5 weeks early in labour

But her baby wanted to appear.

After hours of anxious waiting,

And the thought of all her pain.

At 9.55 in the morning,

The message finally came.

It’s what we’d all been waiting for,

The best news in the world,

Our Katy and Carl were now proud parents,

To a beautiful baby girl.

They say the best things come in small packages

They say it’s better to be early rather than late.

Well! We now know that is all true,

With the birth of our Amy Kate!

Weighing only a mere 5 pounds,

She’s so fragile and petit.

Measuring a short 14 inches

From her head, too her feet.

She winces, she yawns,

She stretches, she cries.

She has locks of dark hair

And sparkling, blue eyes.

She’s like a doll, so new,

Made perfect in every way.

To be cherished and loved

Each and every day.

Our Katy was so happy to be a Mum

And Carl a proud Dad.

But life as taken a cruel twist

And now we’re all feeling so sad.

For our beautiful granddaughter

And treasure to behold.

Has been taken away from us

When she was only eight days old.

She doesn’t wince, she doesn’t yawn

She doesn’t stretch, she doesn’t cry.

Our beloved Amy Kate has died

And we still don’t know why!

In the few days of her life

We had precious moments together.

Memories to cherish and save

That will last with us forever.

We had hopes and dreams

We had plans for the years ahead.

But now we’re making plans

That all parents must dread.

For we must lay her to rest

At heavens door.

Where we can watch over her

Forever more.

But we’ll still take you to the park

We’ll still tell you stories at night

We’ll take you to the seaside

When the sun shines bright.

For even though you’re now gone

And our lives must still go on.

We’ll always take you with us Amy

Our special, little precious one.
