discovery
Hi Does anyone remember my grandparents - Edith and Lewis Lant of Lant's fish and chips, Attercliffe Common? Or my Dad, Ian who went to Coleridge Road School.
gosling
Hi Dinnerlady, We lived at 33 Bodmin St. next to Huntsmans Garden. I went to school there from 1937 to 44 & loved it. Dad used to do a few electrical jobs for Harry. I remember Harry getting us out of bed around 6 a.m. when on holiday & walking with us down to a cafe where we had a mug of hot tea spliced with scotch supplied by Harry. We kids thought it was great but I don't know if mum would have approved if she had known :o
wain
Hello Gosling I went to Huntsmans Gardens about the same time as you, I left at age 11 in 1945. Do you remember Mrs Taylor? She was Ramsden before she married. Wonderful memories of my years in Attercliffe. I remember the names but lost touch with them. Joe Ashton was in my class, he is the only one I met in years. Sheila Jolly, Maureen King, Margaret Dove.. Anybody out there remember Margaret Wain?
JOGI
Apologies for coming in on your Attercliffe discussions, but I'm sure you lads and lasses can help with my failing memory. Although since 1942, I've worked ( at Edgar Allens, Hadfields, Tinsley Wire, and married a girl from the side of the Plumpers pub 55 years ago), my memory has blanked out on a certain section of Attercliffe road. I'm trying to recall the section between Lock-House lane ,(opp. tram sheds) and Broughton Lane. I can recall the pub at bottom of Lockhouse Lane and the then Wraggs the Roofers, bottom of Broughton Lane, but nothing in between. I've got a vague memory of Metro-Vickers somewhere. Was there a Tommy Wards Scrap yard near the tram sheds.? Thanks
gosling
Hi Wain, Can't remember your name - the memory isn't as good as it used to be. My sister Betty was in Miss Ramsden's class & didn't get on with her at all, my teacher was Miss Hoyle. They were good days.
wain
Hi Gosling I loved Mrs. Taylor (nee Ramsden) She is the teacher who made a difference in my life. Now Miss Hoyle was a different story. She scared the living daylights out of me. She told us that she had eyes in the back of her head. and when she was playing the piano she could see exactly what was going on in the classroom behind her. Of course I believed her. When she played that piano I did not move a muscle. The picture in my mind of Miss Hoyle is of the back of her head!
