Handsworth in the Late 50s

Does anyone have memories of Handsworth in the late 50s, early 60s?

Here are some of my memories:

The fair coming every year to the sports ground behind the Working Men's Club opposite the Cross Keys pub. As kids, we would cheer its arrival and wait for two special lorries "Metal Monster" and Iron Man."

Playing in Handsworth Church yard.

The Vimto Shop in the shops across from the Plaza Cinema.

Saturday mornings at the Plaza Cinema.

I lived in Handsworth from 1954 until 1968 and spent my teenage years there. I have fond memories of the Vimto shop and Handsworth parish centre.I remember the visiting fair and hanging around the Rec.Also went to the Youth club at the Centre where Ray Hukin was the boy all girls wanted to date .... and I did! Can remember Peter Firth being killed on his motor-bike.We all thought we were invincible. We had a great gang of friends. Hope they all have as happy (mostly) memories as I do.

I remember that fair. I was a teenager, trying to impress my date. I was part of a double date actually. Went on one of those wretched rides and promptly threw up right afterwards. The wretched ride caused me to wretch. Don't think that relationship lasted that long. :gag:

I am another one that used to go to the fair in fact it is where I went on my first date with my boyfriend in 1960 now we are married. I remember Ray Hukin but he was younger than me and a friend of my brother in law he now lives in Australia. Great times and never cost much for a good time out.
