metalman
This photo shows a green lane near Wortley, off Rough Lane. It starts at a farm, and ends in the middle of a wood, with no discernible buildings anywhere along its length. Yet on the A to Z it is, intriguingly, called Chemistry Lane. So does anyone know any history of this place, and whether it's connected at all with the equally curiously-named Chemistry Cottages, which are near to Wortley Top Forge? Chemistry Cottages are apparently so called because it was the site used for the manufacture of smallpox vaccine after the technique of variolation (a sort of subcutaneous vaccination) was introduced into this country from Turkey by Lady Mary Wortley Montague. metalman
If I've managed to do this right, it should be in the middle of this map.
