fourfive
I'm trying to date a photo that i have, i'm told its taken in 1940 but there is still wrought iron railings up in the picture. So my question is, what year did the railings get cut down? Thanks for any help.

kev21662
It was largely a propaganda exercise (pots and pans for the War effort etc) and most of the iron was dumped in the sea. A complete act of vandalism!

40summat
The same thing happened all over the country, Wrought iron railings cut down for the war effort but found to be low grade and useless.
BILDEBORG
I recall when living on Carr Road, Walkley in the mid 70's, all of the houses with large gardens had wooden gates of one form or another as we did, but one of our neighbours, a chap called Aaron Justice had fabulous wrought iron gates.....he heard they were coming to take all the ironwork away and promptly oiled his gates and buried them under his lawn....rehung them after the war! Floridablade
The council men came to cut ours down,we lived on Millmount Road but my father was home and he told them to bugger off,and they did.we were the only house with wrought iron railings after the war. None of the railings were used, they were put in a scrap yard and rotted away. There were more Hitlers in England than Germany, and Sheffield had more than its fare share.
