The seeds have been sewn and it's fertile ground for Bungalows and Bears' latest event, Afroturf.

Afroturf is to be monthly event, showcasing the finest of UK afrobeat, funk, soul, jazz and pickings from the four corners of the global lawn. Afroturf will be digging the soils to bring the underground overground, hosting live acts who draw their inspiration from some of the richest musical cultures across the world.

Afroturf is hosting a very special launch event on Saturday 5th December at Bungalows and Bears on Division Street, Sheffield. The event is FREE and will run from 8pm til 1am.

A double-bill kicks of with a rare performance by Mim Suleiman, lead vocalist from the Sheffield-based roots and afrobeat ensemble, Rafiki Jazz. Born in Zanzibar (Tanzania), singer song-writer Mim stays true to her roots with deep, soulful and fiery vocals, accompanied by the rousing percussive traditions of East Africa. From America to Jamaica; South Wales to South Africa, her influences are wide-spread – an embodiment of the diversity and vibrancy of African diaspora.

Afroturf is also proud to host The Worm. Hailing from Dalston, London, The Worm describe themselves as a melting pot of '21st century mali-reggae-garage'. Afroturf clocked this band back in 2007 and was blown away by the unique combination of sharp drumming, soft melodies, hilarious narratives, the jazz, the classic strings and the sentient poly-Rhythms of West Africa thrown in for good measure.

Accompanying the bands is Afroturf's resident DJ Jen-Wah-Zee... plus the talents from within her record bag: Antibalas, Fela Kuti, Budos Band, Heliocentrics, Ebo Taylor, Baaba Maal, Whitefield Brothers, Bola Johnson, Oumou Sangare, Bison, Bassekou Kouyate, Mulatu Astake, Poets of Rhythm, Orchestre Poly Rhythmo, Daktaris, Menehan Street Band, Mahmoud Ahmed, Kokolo to name just a few.

Afroturf is a brand new night coordinated by Jennifer Rich (aka DJ Jen-Wah-Zee).* New audiences meet new sounds and the hidden become heard, in a celebration of some of the most vibrant musical cultures across the world and their influence on contemporary music as we know it today.
