On Saturday December 12th we have our final Americana Night of the year at The Grapes. Helping us to see off 2009 with a bang will be the fabulous Piney Gir, touring in support of wonderful new album 'The Yearling'. As if that wasn't enough we also have the excellent Listeners and there will be one more live guest plus the usual mix on fine Americana & Alt-Country records between bands. Doors open at 8pm and entry is just £4.

***PINEY GIR***

Piney Gir, sometime electronic exotica lover (Peakahokahoo); genuine all-American country girl (The Piney Gir Country Roadshow), returns to the musical fray with her most accomplished album to date… The Yearling.

An ambitious and darling blend of her inspired songwriting and deft way with genre, The Yearling combines delicate heartbreak folk (The Weeping Machine) with straight to the bop pop (Say I'm Sorry), whilst plying her way with a campfire narrative (Miss Havisham) and all of it dipped in the gal's never less than pin-sharp eye for a great story about the wanderings of the heart.

Pulling in a parade of collaborators spanning country slides, orchestral strings, found sounds, saw playing food gurus and, hush! even a celebrity appearance on a love-gone-wrong duet, this is Piney's most dazzling record yet. Quite a cocktail… the simple structures of her country record with a shot of heartbreak that comes from the moonshine of life’s own harsh still. The Yearling fuses cutting edge production taking a nod from German electronica, spanning its way to warm 70s FM radio with a loving how-do-you-do to musique concrète.

Latest single "Say I'm Sorry" was made single of the week by Drowned In Sound. You can check out the video here:

Recently you might also have heard the song getting regular airplay on Radcliffe & Maconie's BBC Radio 2 show, and there have also been sessions on BBC 6 Music with both Cerys Matthews and Marc Riley this year.

'Of All The Wonderful Things' was also featured by Tom Robinson on a recent mixtape for The Guardian: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/musicblog/2009/oct/15/tom-robinson-mixtape

***THE LISTENERS***

The Listeners are a duo from the North of England. Emma Thorpe provides the main voice, a velvet glove softening the punch, delivering The Listeners songs with, in turn, uncompromising invective and heart on sleeve insight. Robert Cook's dark baritone voice and explosive guitar lines complete The Listeners emotive sound.

They have had a busy year, curating their own monthly night 'The Weight', and are set to hit the studio in 2010 to begin work on their first full length album.

***DAVE WOODCOCK & A DEAD COMEDIAN***

Dave Woodcock is a singer-songwriter based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. His songs deal unflinchingly with love and its consequences - happiness, unhappiness, loss, loneliness and drinking. He used to front alt rock folk country blues punks Taste of Shotgun before going solo combining all his influences to create something unique.

Woodcock has been compared favourably with the likes of Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Lou Reed and Joe Strummer - with reviewers commenting,

"Blinding....Dave has an onstage presence which few can touch, naturally laid back and cool, straight out of a Clint Eastwood movie" (soundaloud.com)

and praising his "truly genuine songs of love and drink" (unsigned sheffield).

More recently he brought together a fine collection of musicians from the Sheffield music scene to form The Dead Comedians. After various line up changes over the last couple of years, Dave says he's now found the line up "that just feels RIGHT." Tonight he'll be joined by guitarist Chris Saunders. New album "Omaha High Low" is out now.
