Old Sparkey
Hi ya'll Does anyone out there remember Gerry Scholes and what happened to him? Gerry ran Sheffield's first 'Glossy' monthly magazine in the late '60's & early '70's, The Sheffield Spectator. His 'offices' were in a house situated just off Eccy Rd., opposite the bottom of Collegiate Crescent. He was not against the odd imbibement (Vera's Nursery Tav. was just accross the road !) and he had a stock reply when being asked how he was "dear boy, I'm embarrassingly well". Think his wife's name was Pat. I appreciate this question applies to another time zone, but thought I'd ask !!

Old Sparkey
Hi xenia - yes, Gerry went into business with a blind Sheffield solicitor by the name of Roy Chester. They took over and ran The Cavendish Hotel/Pub in Baslow during the mid seventies.
xenia
I used to go there occasionally with Dennis and Margaret Ardron from Wingerworth. Gerry was a very pleasant obliging guy. They had a resident called Mr barclay who was one of the banking family very eccentric but very nice interesting chap. No idea what happened to Gerry after the Cavendish. xenia
Also I have just recalled Pat, she was liable to the odd imbibement from time to time.
johnstraw
Gerry and Pat were great friends of my parents Colin and Joyce Straw I believe they both past away - Gerry was very ill some years ago. They lost their only daughter, Yvette, to illness some 15 years ago and it destroyed them both. Very sad.
Old Sparkey
Hi Johnstraw, Met your father, Colin on quite a few occasions with 'Mr Scholes' sorry to hear Gerry has finally succumbed to the Big Publishing House in the sky!! A great character, sadly not many around these days!! Cheers Old Sparkey (keeping my seat warm)

Old Sparkey
Hello Johnstraw, So sorry to hear about your mother. I know how you must feel. A very sad time for you, and its easy to try and be flippant, but as the Monty Python song said "Alway's Look on the bright side of life"! MUM WILL BE WATCHING !! Take care Cheers Old Sparkey - my bums getting warmer!!!
