Interesting places in and around Sheffield

I take part in something called Geocaching which is basically a hi-tec treasure hunt and am always on the look out for new places and hidey holes around sheffield. I always like these to have a bit of history behind them as it keeps it interesting for the finder. I also like them to be a little off the beaten track, maybe in woods, or common/disused land. Does anyone have any suggestions as to new places to have one of these treasure hunts, preferably big quiet places (woods?)with some history?

Theres already loads in the Peak District but not so many in Sheffield.

Try the Bolehills up form Rivlin Valley towards Crookes. In certain positions you can see the outlines of the three venturies that helped smelt the metal.

By the way, my family found one of your 'geocaches' by accident at the Magpie Mine in Derbyshire a couple of years ago.

 

We scribbled a note in the notebook inside stating that we'd found it and were reburying it. Did we do right?

You certainly did. You ought to buy a GPS and join in! You could look on geocaching dot com and see if anyone noticed your log entry and put it on the website.
