In the 19th century and for some time afterwards, racing evidently took place at Sheffield Lane Paddocks near Ecclesfield - a few photos are on the picturesheffield.com site, such as this one. There was also a racecourse at Redmires from the 1870s onwards; the land was used by the army during the First World War, and it later became the Lodge Moor p.o.w. camp.

I don't believe there was ever a racecourse at Sheffield Lane Top. There was very likely a 'gallop' in the fields thereabouts, for Paddock Farm was in it's time a famous training establishment.

Re the Crookesmoor racecourse here is what R.E, Leader has to say about it —

The same body [the Town Trustees] went to some expense to get horses to the races at Crookes Moor-where is now Fulwood Road; and the subscriptions of the wealthier inhabitants were suffciently liberal to justify the erection of a grand stand, whose memory is perpetuated in "Stand House." The first reference to these races is in 1711. They were discontinued in 1781; and in 1790 the race stand was taken down, and "the produce divided among the original subscribers to its erection."

Joseph Hunter, in his chapter on "The Township of Ecclesall-Byerlow", agrees with R.E. Leader on racing at "Crook's Moor" and ends with the rather laconic statement "The enclosure bill gave the death-blow to this amusement".

have you all forgotten the racecoarse at New Hall,it was approximately where Paget st was, believe it or not in the 1700s the area was built with beutiful gardens and a horse racing coarse of some significance, unfortunately the was more money to be made from the new industrial revolution and it was all built upon.

you are right greybeard there was never a race track at sheffield lane top,it was known as sheffield lane end stud and many famous race horses were bred there and quite a few are buried in the quarries which were around the area.It is believed king Edward and lily langtree bought horses from this stud.
